La Crosse, Wisconsin to Lansing, Michigan: Getting to know our neighbours day 6
Looks beautiful right???? Well, actually it was the calm before the storm! Literally!!!! But... even the worst day driving is better than an average day flying.... Even if the rain felt like waves crashing against the side and we crawled along at 10 miles an hour... I have a video too!
Now remember what I said about Wyoming's bad highways! The Gods were laughing, because they have nothing on the highways I passed over today!!! Oh my goodness, some parts looked like battlefields around Chicago - and the drivers are mental. Posted speed 55 - most people going at 70 - and some weaving in and out to gain a car length. Good thing I have so much UAE driving under my belt or I would have been stressed. Instead it felt like home again :)
The day in numbers:
4: States visited (a record for this trip!) Wisconsin (loved it and plan to go back), Illinois (only to the airport and then to visit that fancy restaurant I promised my niece to take her when she is 21), Indiana, and Michigan (I am NOT drinking the water here, even scared to drink coffee...)
1: time I pulled over because it got too crazy with the rain... and mental bad roads
1: time I refused to take the directions provided by my car - wanted me to go through Chicago because of construction on the Interstate - not a chance!
8: large animal road kill (HATE that they don't collect and dispose of the bodies)
3: times I felt like I was on Dallas Rd in Victoria during a storm when the waves would crash against the car... sideways torrents of rain sucks.
Observations:
American infrastructure is crumbling... at least in the States around Lake Michigan... and drivers are mental. It felt like I was back in the UAE - cars weaving in and out... no signalling, big trucks in the wrong lanes and lane hogging. Made me miss previous days driving!
Gas is cheap ... as I pay by cash I need to pay ahead, then tank up and then get my change... I ALWAYS overestimate... oh well. Soon enough I will be back in Canada :)
The vast majority of goods is still transported by road in North America - Canada needs to invest in a true Trans-Canada highway with double lanes all the way Coast to Coast (and to the North). My Van Horne roots run strong!
Now to fewer photos and lots of clouds!
Was thinking I had a beautiful day ahead! |
Still had no clue... but though there would be rain ahead |
And it begins (few photos from the bad stuff... two handed driving) |
Gassing up in Chicago - wind and more rain ahead of me... but it had to be driven through! |
Ominous clouds ahead |
BIG sky and BIG clouds |
Another red farm house |
I love this photo.... |
